Industry juggernaut Play’n Go does not stop. They continuously add titles to their library of 250-plus games and are responsible for some of the sector’s most popular products. In October of 2019, they decided to diversify their catalog by incorporating a bee-themed reel-spinner. Unsurprisingly, there are a few of these floating around in the interactive gaming space. Play’n Go’s product uses many of the same cliché motifs in this release to decent effect. After a thunderous debut, Honey Rush quickly plummeted in the playability rankings, only to make a comeback in June of 2020. Today, it has sunk to its deepest depths. Thus, it is the perfect time to review if it was at all worthy of its former glory or not.

Theme & Design

The theme here is honey, obviously. We mentioned that there are a few titles that also incorporate it. So, what are some? Off the top of our heads, we can list Wild Swarm from Push Gaming, Bee Frenzy from Playtech, and Honey Honey Honey from Pragmatic Play. However, the game that Honey Rush reminds us of is The Hive from Betsoft. It came out eight months after this reel-spinner hit online casinos. Thus, it is safe to say that this product may have inspired that one, as both utilize a hexagonal grid pattern and cartoony visuals.

The gameplay here plays out in a forest mid-day. The semi-transparent grid floats in front of a u-shaped tree, while the background remains blurred. There, we can only make out a ton of light green and sun-rays piercing through branches, and not much else. The backdrop visuals are 2D illustrations that incorporate leaves falling and plants swaying, while the gameplay elements utilize some 3D graphics. The music of Honey Rush is light, cheerful, and unobtrusive. We love it. The win animations are par for the course, so we remain neutral when it comes to them.

The buttons configuration here is unlike those of other Play’n Go slots we have looked at on the site. Presentation-wise, it is theme-specific. The spin and auto-spin buttons are on the right side of the screen, and the info one is on the left. The bet-adjuster is the middle. There is a distinct panel at the very bottom of the screen where you can find the mute and settings options.

Specs & Gameplay

Honey Rush is a super-high variance slot that uses a 4-5-6-7-6-5-4 grid format. It features the cascading symbol mechanic. So symbols fall onto the reels, and you win prizes when five or more land on adjacent positions in a cluster. Those parts of winning combos disappear while the rest tumble down as new symbols fall in their place. The default RTP here is 96.54%. However, some sites may carry this game in its 96.50% and 94.50% versions. Non-MGA platforms may also have it with an RTP as low as 84.50%. Make sure that you always check this spec before spinning. The bet sizes here range from $0.2 to $100, and the max exposure is a satisfactory x9,000.

Four flowers (petunias, pink daffodils, roses, and sunflowers) are this game’s low-paying symbols. They payout wins that range from x0.1 to x20 for clusters of five to thirty-five flowers. The high-paying symbols are bronze, silver, and gold coins, as well as diamonds. They pay out rewards from x0.3 to x200. Honey Rush’s red honeypots are its Wilds.

Bonus Features

You can see the Rush Meter to the right of the reel grid. It has four levels. All wins contribute to charging this meter. The Sticky Wilds can have an x1, x2, or x3 multiplier attached and can only appear on the grid via the Rush Meter, which adds them on the second reel ring from the outside at random. You attain level one on this meter after collecting twenty winning symbols. It triggers the Drone Colony feature, which creates a minimum cluster of seven symbols before placing a Sticky Wild on the grid. The same thing happens in the next two levels. When you reach the fourth one, you activate the Queen Colony. You need one hundred and sixty winning symbols to get to level four, which triggers the Queen Colony. The mode is similar to Reactoonz’s Gargantoon feature. There is also a Worker Colony feature that can activate at random after a non-winning reel-rotation. It creates a cluster of up to fifteen symbols. The game does not incorporate free spins.
