League of Legends Explained for Beginners

League of Legends is a renowned team-based strategy game developed by Riot Games. Two teams of five players (the standard for online battle royale games) square off in a bid to destroy their rival’s base camp. With over 140 champions to choose from, towers, and epic battles to keep the action hot, it is not a surprise to learn that League of Legends has a massive viewing audience, even amongst those who don’t play the game themselves.

What Is League of Legends?

League of Legends is not as difficult to grasp as some other battle royale games, but there are still some LoL things you need to know. Once two teams have set up on a map, each will have to try and destroy their opponent’s base while defending their own. To do that, they will need to clear a lane (there are three) to their enemy base. Stopping them from doing that are turrets and inhibitors (both defensive features). The base itself is also guarded by turrets.

The jungle between the lanes is filled with NPCs, monsters, and jungle plants. Baron Nashor and Drakes represent the most dangerous of these neutral units that attack all players alike. By unlocking abilities and powering through, a team will ultimately come out on top. There are three locales on each map that are also worth noting:

Destroy the Nexus

The primary goal in any League of Legends game is to destroy the Nexus. The Nexus is the heart of your enemy’s base. Once the enemy’s Nexus has been obliterated, the game is over, and a winning team is decided.

The Replenishing Fountain

Players can re-spawn when they die. However, that doesn’t have to happen. Behind the Nexus is a feature known as The Fountain. If you make it to the fountain, you can quickly replenish your health and mana, delaying death to fight on.

Buying Goodies in the Shop

LoL players survive and get better by upgrading their arsenal. When items have been spent, and upgrades are required, League of Legends players will visit the Shop. There, they can purchase the goodies they need to continue to fight toward victory.

Depending on the parameters of the match, once a team has won enough victories (for instance, won at least two matches in a best-of-three tie), then they are declared the winner. Winning teams will advance if a tournament is being played.

How to bet on League of Legends Online

League of Legends features largely the same types of bets you can find in all battle royale type e-sports. To help you better understand the options presented to you, we’ve detailed the most common types of LoL bets below. They include:

Map Betting

This is a bet on which side will win the first map, a specific map, or win any given number of maps in a match.

Outrights

These bets are wagered on a team to be vicious. That may be over a single game, an entire match, or a tournament. Match/game-winners are known as money line bets, while outright predictions on tournament winners are known as futures.

Totals

Here you can win on a total occurring in a match. For instance, the number of kills a player will have, the number of times team members will die, the number of matches a team will win, and so on. With Overs/Unders, you are permitted to be over or under a specific amount, as dictated by the bet.

Props

Also known as proposition bets, these are bets on “something happening”. For instance, you can find First Blood, Team to Draw First Blood, Win the Map, Score the Most Kills, Team to Destroy the First Tower, Both Teams to Slay a Dragon, and Team to Slay the First Baron options here. Bets are quite specific, and that can lead to varying odds being available.

Skin Betting

Technically, this isn’t really betting. What you’re going here is purchasing (or selling) cosmetics and goods through a LoL market. However, because loot boxes are sometimes involved, some gambling authorities consider skin betting to amount to gambling. It is worth noting that only League of Legends players will engage in skin betting. Casual bettors with an interest in the game but who don’t play can’t engage in this activity.

What Major League of Legends Events Can I Bet On?

League of Legends gaming events take place throughout the year. However, some events are deemed to be more important than others. Some feature the world’s best players and teams, while others are amateur affairs open to nearly everyone. Some are even domestic tournaments that act as qualifiers to the main events, working in much the same way as poker satellites. Here is a brief look at some of the most popular events that are regularly available to bet on:

World Championship

The World Championship is deemed the top event to bet on, watch and play in. It is played once per year and has dozens of satellite tournaments. This is the competition you want to join if you want to bet on the best players and teams from across the LoL world.

Tier Tournaments

League of Legends tournaments are divided into tiers. S-Tier events feature the best players and have the biggest prize pools. A-Tiers are a step down from that but still feature the best teams. B Tier events offer less prestigious prize pools but still draw decent crowds. C-Tier events are essentially national competitions and divisions.

Amateur Tournaments

Everybody must start somewhere. Amateur tournaments are usually run at local levels. Here, budding stars get their big break. While there isn’t a lot of prize money available, and bookmakers only occasionally offer markets and selections, the next star can often be found at this tier.

Top Tips for League of Legends Betting Online

While there is no guaranteed way to ensure victory in League of Legends matches, there are things you can do to ensure that you stand a decent chance of being successful. We’ve decided to share some of our top League of Legends betting tips with you below. For instance…

Follow the Unknowns

Following fledgling stars can be handy, as you could go on to know a lot about them before rival bettors in the future. We recommend watching amateur (C-Tier) national events, as these can see you get a heads up on upcoming talent. By the time they reach the bookies, you should already know all about them, potentially giving you a competitive advantage.

Watch, Observe, and Make Notes

If you’ve got free time, why not pop on Twitch or YouTube, and ensure that you watch LoL being played? By watching players engage in “for-fun” games, you can learn how they play. This could be invaluable if you want to net on them in real money competitions later.

Play the Game Yourself

League of Legends is notably free to play, so there is nothing stopping you from having a crack at the game yourself. Of course, if you want all the goodies, these are typically found in loot boxes, or you’ll need to do a bit of skin betting to acclimatize quickly. However, don’t let that trouble you. You can also do things the slow way, and this will help you understand the game better.

You can, but we wouldn’t recommend it. If you’re competing in a tournament and you bet on yourself to lose, you’re likely to be disqualified and potentially banned for match-fixing. We’d give betting on yourself a wide berth.
