48% of Adults in the UK Gambled in the past 4 weeks

The Gambling Commission recently released its UK Gamblers Stats and Survey for Great Britain (GSGB). Providing valuable insights into the gambling habits of adults in the UK. Conducted by NatCen, the survey was taken over five months from July to November 2023, with 4,801 respondents participating.

A significant finding from the survey is that 48% of respondents acknowledged engaging in gambling activities within the last four weeks at the time of the survey. This comprehensive study sheds light on various aspects, including the preferred gambling verticals, age demographics, and the public’s perceptions of betting.

UK Gamblers Stats – Gambling Preferences

Breaking down the gambling preferences, the survey revealed that 38% of respondents gambled online, while 29% preferred in-person experiences at retail locations, such as physical casinos or lottery kiosks. Interestingly, 31% purchased National Lottery tickets, with 21% exclusively choosing lottery tickets as their form of gambling.

Demographic Insights

The survey highlighted the prominence of men aged 45-54 as the primary demographic for gambling. However, when lottery participation was excluded, this demographic shifted to men aged 18-44. This analysis provides a more comprehensive understanding of the different gambling preferences within different age groups.

Which are the Most Popular Betting Types?

Delving into specific gambling verticals, the survey identified live football as the most popular sport for betting. Followed closely by live dog and horseracing. Lottery draws emerged as the most favoured gambling activity, with 37% participation, followed by scratchcards at 13%, sports and events betting at 10%, and instant win games at 7%.

How Do the British Public Feel about Gambling

Exploring public sentiment towards gambling, 37% of respondents expressed a neutral stance, rating their feelings as 5 out of 10. Intriguingly, 4% each voted at the extremes, with 0/10 indicating strong dislike and 10/10 reflecting a strong affinity for gambling.

The Gambling Commission’s latest survey provides a comprehensive snapshot of the gambling landscape in the UK. By examining participation rates and demographic variations, this research is important. Moreover, to understand the dynamics of gambling behaviour in the United Kingdom.

However, we felt that the survey should have been done over a longer period and with more participants. We don’t feel that just 4801 participants are enough of the British population for the results to be a true analysis.
