We’ve discussed more than a few Relax Gaming slots on this site. While this Malta-based developer has been in the industry for over a decade, it is still not held in a level of esteem such as NetEnt or Play’n Go. However, that doesn’t mean that its titles lack quality. On the contrary, Money Train is a perfect example of what its development team can do. Marching Legions hit online casinos in August of 2020, and while it does not connect to Relax’s Snake Arena, the two share a stylistic resemblance. Though, Marching Legions has fared slightly better popularity-wise and still manages to pull in respectable player numbers.
Theme & Design
The theme of this game is the Roman legion, Rome’s largest military unit. It consisted of infantry forces of 4,000 and cavalry of around 300 soldiers on horseback. This unit is most famous for its testudo formation, where soldiers formed a shield wall during sieges, as depicted in movies such as Gladiator, The Eagle, and Centurion.
While the Roman legion fought and won hundreds of bloody battles, things here are far more upbeat. When it comes to character design, the legionnaires’ faces look a lot like the main character from Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph animated franchise. However, their bodies are that of Minions from the animated series of the same name. We mentioned Snake Arena, and as in that game, this one also opens with an introductory animation. It is a 3D slot that utilizes low-poly models and a lot of vibrant colors. The mood here is comic, as the game does not take itself too seriously. You get a top-down view of the Pantheon’s stone court, and the reels spin in front of its entrance in the base game. In the Free Spins round, the scenery changes. The reel-grid moves inside a wooden fort during nighttime.
The button configuration is your standard Relax Gaming one. The spin and auto-spin buttons are in the middle of your screen. The bet adjusters, the mute, and settings buttons are in your lower left, and the wager and balance information are on your right.
Specs & Gameplay
Marching Legions is a five-reel, three-row game that utilizes the 243-ways-to-win format. It has a staggeringly high RTP of 98.12%, a high variance, and a hit frequency of over 25%. Bet sizes here range from $0.10 to $100, and the max exposure is x10,000, which makes the top prize a cool million. Note that if you opt to buy your way into the Free Spins round, the RTP drops to 97.13%. Winning combos form here when you land two to five identical symbols on adjacent reels left to right.
The low-paying symbols in this game are tokens that represent Cesar, the Aquila, and the Pantheon. If you hit five matching ones from this group, you get a prize that is x1 to x1.2 your bet. The high-paying symbols are a battle flag, Caesar’s wreath, and a sword, also known as a gladius. If five matching symbols from this batch appear on the reels, you will get a prize that’s x2 to x3 your bet. The flag is the most valuable of the three. The legionnaire is also a premium symbol, and it can appear stacked on the reel grid. Depending on which version shows up, you can win a prize that will range between x1 to x2.5.
There is no Wild or Scatter in Marching Legions, but there is a horn symbol, which comes into play in the bonus feature, which we will explain below.
Bonus Features
Since there are no Wilds and Scatters here, the legionnaire symbol is the core of this slot’s gameplay. If you land a full stack (x3) encased in a frame, you will activate the Marching Respins feature. At random, partially-stacked legionnaires can nudge to become fully stacked. Note that this can only happen when there are no marching stacks on the grid. When the Respins feature is active, you get another spin, with your stacked legionnaires marching one reel to the left. They will continue to do so until they walk off the grid. When they do, they charge a meter in the top left. The meter has five levels. You need 66 stacks to advance a tier and 330 to enter the Free Spins bonus round.
The Free Spins round begins with your legion marching into Brittan. There, they make a home at a fort, you get a new meter, and the previously mentioned horn symbol comes into play, only landing on reel five. You play this round in waves. During the initial one, your legion marches from the rightmost reel to off the grid. If during this march you land three horn symbols, you will progress to the second wave. There, two stacks will make the same march. If you land three horn symbols during their walk, you’ll get another wave. There are five in total, and on the fifth one, the reels will be full of soldiers. You can retrigger the fifth wave as long as you land three horns before all your legionnaires make it off the grid.
The Bonus Buy option lets you skip all the symbol collections, and it gets you instant access in the main event for a price of x120 your base wager.
GOSU Verdict
We have to say, while entry in the Free Spins round is not easy, this slot provides some decent entertainment value if you can accept staying in the base game for extended periods. Yes, Marching Legions has a super-high RTP, but it is still a high variance title with no Wilds. So things can get brutal. All in all, we feel like its unique gameplay outweighs its flaws, and it is worth a spinning session or two. It has charm, and the bonus round is a nail-biter if we ever saw one.

Marching Legions is a slot I always come back to. I always do “buy bonus rounds”, I don’t have the patience to play for bonus. 🙂 I simply wish to see those “Marching Legions” as soon as possible. 🙂
