Red Tiger has not been in the news much recently. The last headline we remember reading about one of the most passionate game developers in the online gambling sphere dates back to March this year. At that time, we received a press release that Red Tiger had signed a deal with Scandinavian entertainment and leisure provider Aktiebolaget Trav och Galopp (ATG) to power this brand’s sites with online casino software. Theme & Design

As the name suggests, the theme here is Athens, the most massive city in Greece and the nation’s capital. Naturally, as most would assume, the modern-day version of this city is not the focus here but the ancient one. Classical Athens was a center for the arts, a powerful city-state, home to Aristotle’s Lyceum and Plato’s Academy. Many referred to it as the birthplace of democracy and the cradle of the Western World. Athens Megaways takes us back to the Golden Age of this famous and historically significant place through painterly visuals that seek to create a romanticized Ancient Greek setting. The reels here spin in front of a hill backdrop, a landscape of what Athens might have looked like centuries ago. We mentioned that this game’s presentation caught our eye in the intro, and it did because it features loads of animations. And something is continuously happening on screen in its bonus rounds, which is not always the case with Red Tiger releases.

The visuals here get complimented with a Halloween-like theme at times, as this game has somewhat of a spooky motif, which comes into play in the Free Spins and base game here. We have to say that the audio side of things is a bit dull and uninspiring. At least it did not fit our taste. It could have been faster-paced and louder. Also, it did not gel with the big-win music.

We must note that when we tried to play this game in demo mode via Red Tiger’s official website, various elements did not appear in our game interface. That meant we had to play it at one of our highlighted sites that houses Red Tiger products. Athens Megaways is a medium-to-high variance title with a max win potential of x19,992 on a max bet of $100. That is surprisingly awesome. The lowest bet one can make here is $0.1, and the game has up to 117,649 betways. Since it has Megaways in its name, of course, you can expect a random number (up to seven) of symbols to appear on each reel per spin, of which there are six. You need to match at least three on adjacent reels to win a prize.

The low-pay tokens here are Greek letters acting as card royals, generating prizes from x0.4 to x0.8 for six-of-a-kind combos. The high-paying ones are various Greek artifacts, paying x1 to x3 for six identical ones landing on the game layout on the same reel rotation. Note that there are no regular wilds here. Instead, randomly-appearing modifiers add wilds to the grid that substitute the pay symbols. The Greek Parthenon is the scatter token in Athens Megaways.

Bonus Features

Now, to first get into the random modifiers. Souls can rise from Hades and create up to nine symbols wild on the middle four reels. Poseidon can send up to four mighty water stallions on the game setup as Super Wilds that have multipliers with values of x2 to x7 attached. And Zeus himself may also hurl lightning bolts from the heavens that add win multipliers on any given spin.

If you hit three Parthenon scatters, Athens Megaways will make you choose one of the three activating scatters, and your chosen one will reveal one of the mentioned modifiers.
