Theme & Design

For those ignorant regarding hip-hop, let’s explain the theme of this title. East Coast vs West Coast was a 1990s feud between Los Angeles and New York musicians. Famous rappers representing the East Coast were the Notorious B.I.G, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, the Beastie Boys, and others. On the West Coast side, you had artists such as Snoop Dogg, Tupac, N.W.A, Dr. Dre, and others. If you know anything about music, then you are aware that these are names of lyrical legends. The feud died down after the murder of Tupac Shakur and the shooting of The Notorious B.I.G, better known as Biggie.

Enough of rap history. How does all this tie into this reel-spinner? Well, Nolimit aimed to capture some of the feel of the mid-1990s via cartoony graphics reminiscent of early GTA releases and some jammin’ beats. East Coast vs West Coast has a visual style similar to Hacksaw Gaming’s Chaos Crew, which we also review. We make the comparison because both games use graffiti art and vibrant colors. However, the character design here has a very pop-arty feel, as it utilizes historical figures with modern-day accessories. The backdrop divides into two as LA has the left side, and NY has the right. The reel-gird is in the middle as symbols spin in front of a brick wall. Presentation-wise, the music of East Coast vs West Coast is the star of this show. It sets the mood perfectly. However, we could have done without the drive-by sound effects.

The buttons configuration here is the standard Nolimit City one. You have your spin and auto-spins buttons on the right side of the screen and your mute, bet-adjuster, and settings buttons on your left. The Bonus Buy option is above the latter. Unavailable in the base game, they appear at the top of the grid and either award multipliers or increase the win-ways. The xWays enhancer transforms itself into two to three identical symbols.
