Buffalo Hunter Slot Review
For one reason or another, game developers have in their heads that online slot players love buffalos. We assume that this craze stems from the success of the physical machine – Buffalo by Aristocrat. In 2008 it got the online treatment and spawned a sub-genre featuring the animals of North America’s plains. In August of 2020, Nolimit City took a stab at this theme and released Buffalo Hunter. It has been an up and down ride for this game, as it entered the top 200 rankings one week after its release and almost fell out of the top 3,000 a few months after. It has bounced back in popularity but will not go down as one of Nolimit’s greatest triumphs.
Theme & Design
As mentioned, the theme here is wild buffalos. According to our research, there are over sixty buffalo-themed slots in the interactive gaming space. The most famous ones are Buffalo Blitz by Playtech, Buffalo Rising by Blueprint Gaming, and Big Buffalo by the Skywin Group. You can also check out our review of Buffalo King by Pragmatic Play if you have not had the chance to read it. Nevertheless, there is no denying that buffalos on reels seem to be a recipe for success. However, what is interesting is that most slot designers cannot tell the difference between a buffalo and a bison. They are both members of the Bovinae family, but most of these games feature a bison, not a buffalo, this one included. A bison is a creature with a large hump, a big beard, and a thick coat. A buffalo has long curved horns and a less powerful-looking build.
Zoology aside, the visuals here are decent, as the 3D modeling resembles other Nolimit City products, which is a good thing. The reel-grid is a central totem-like construction with native American motifs. It is a 3D model, while the symbols that appear on it are 2D images. The backdrop is a 3D blurred scenery of the American prairie, with overpowering clouds in the sky. We quite liked the soundtrack of this game. It featured tribal flute music, which captures some of that Old West feel.
The button configuration here is the same ole Nolimit one. On the left side of your screen, you have the yellow star, which lets you buy your way into the bonus round. Under it are your bet-adjuster, settings, and mute buttons. On the right side, you have the large spin button and the auto-spin one below it.
Specs & Gameplay
Buffalo Hunter is a five-reel, four-row slot with forty paylines. It is a part of Nolimit’s extreme variance series, and it boasts an average RTP of 96.01%, which improves by 0.33% if you buy your way into the bonus round. Some operators may carry a DX version of this game, which has an RTP of 94.11%. The bet sizes here range from $0.2 to $100, making it suitable for spinners of all-size bankrolls. The max exposure is a terrific x12,647, which is almost double that of other Nolimit slots. You form winning combos by hitting three to five identical symbols on adjacent reels left to right.
The low-paying symbols are your standard card royals 10-a, and they pay out prizes ranging from x3.75 to x5 for five-of-a-kind. The deer, prairie fox, cougar, eagle, and buffalo are the high-paying symbols, and they provide rewards from x6.25 to x50 for five-of-a-kind.
The dreamcatcher symbol is the Wild, and it too has a prize of x50 if you land five dreamcatchers on a single spin. The totem pole is the Scatter, and a glowing blue spiral is the mystery symbol.
Bonus Features
The mystery symbol can land on any spin in full stacks, and when it does, it transforms into the same common pay symbol. It cannot turn into a Wild or Scatter. Thanks to it, you can get a full grid of buffalos that will lead to a payout worth x2,000 your stake.
Landing three to five Scatters activates the Free Spins Bonus Round. If you enter this round via three or four Scatters, you will get eight or ten free spins, respectively, in either the Prairie Multiplier or the Buffalo Horde mode. Yet, hitting five Scatters will trigger the Stampede Super Bonus.
The Buffalo Horde mode has the lowest variance of these three. Inside it, buffalo symbols have a glowing frame around them, and they charge the left-side meter. The symbol order there is deer, prairie fox, cougar, and eagle. Five buffalos turn a high-paying symbol into a buffalo and get you two extra free spins. The Prairie Multipliers feature works similarly. Yet, instead of transformations, multipliers are now in play. Landing five buffalos will increase the buffalo’s multiplier for the remainder of the round by x1, and that of the one high-paying symbol, starting with the deer. Plus, you will get two free spins. The Stampede Super Bonus combines both of the described modes, giving you symbol upgrades and increasing multipliers up to x5.
You can buy your way inside the Buffalo Horde and Prairie Multipliers modes for a price of x100 your wager. However, to activate the Stampede Super Bonus, this cost is x600.
GOSU Verdict
We expect a lot from Nolimit City slots. While Buffalo Hunter does not disappoint, its mechanics are anything but novel, and its base game is boring. Presentation-wise this slot is decent, but it seems to lack character and originality. Nothing about it stands out. It is far better than most regular reel-spinners, but we are judging it on the Nolimit standard. It has a massive win potential, but given its variance, we are unsure if it is worth playing. Test it via demo-play and decide for yourself.
