Boom City Game Review
New live casino games come online all the time. Boom City was one of the first titles to be released by Pragmatic Play in 2022. This is not your conventional, run-of-the-mill roulette or blackjack game, though. Instead, Boom City is one of Pragmatic Play’s “game show” releases, played against a wall and featuring a fresh and innovative new way to bet on live dealer games.
Pragmatic Play often goes head-to-head with Evolution Gaming to lead the way in live dealer game development. On many occasions, you can find like-for-like titles in both their arsenals. That isn’t the case with Boom City, which is a wholly unique game. It has no counterparts or rivals, and that makes it an interesting live dealer game to review. That’s exactly what our team has chosen to do. If you want to learn what Boom City brings to the table, read the rest of our Boom City live casino game review to find out more.
Theme and Design
Boom City has a design and interface that wouldn’t look out of place in any other number of game show-themed titles, particularly those that feature walls. The betting interface bears similarities with Mega Wheel, and the surplus of features are like Sweet Bonanza Candyland, both of which are live titles you can play from Pragmatic Play. This one is streamed from Romania and sent out from one of Pragmatic Play’s live dealer studios. It is a mobile-friendly release and can be played in over fourteen languages. The stream itself is available in 4K, so it offers one of the cleanest, crispest live gambling options to players yet seen.
There is an 80s theme on the go here. The use of neon and old-school, even retro aesthetics certainly creates an atmosphere. However, that isn’t going to win over the crowd. What you need to know is how the game runs – this is where we come in.
Specs and Gameplay
Boom City is a live dealer game that is loosely based on the popular wheel of fortune titles that you can currently find. However, this one uses dice instead of a wheel – the concept remains largely the same, though. Two large dice are rolled, and the outcome of those rolls determines the outcome of a round. There is a six-by-six board behind the host, and the blue die will decide which row is used. The gold die decides which column is selected. Of course, the block that appears at the intersections between the horizontal and vertical positions will be chosen as the winning number.
Players will try to bet which of the fields will win. Bets can stretch from a floor of $0.10 up to $5,000 a pop. No side-bets are permitted in this game, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t bonus options you can stake money on.
You can choose to bet on Orange (1x), Grey (2x), Gold (5x), Red Bust, Power-Up, Dice Battle, Boom or Bust, or Lucky Drop fields. Betting on the Orange, Grey, or Gold colors correctly will see you win their respectable payouts. If the dice indicate that Red Bust has been selected, all bets are lost.
The Power Up mode will improve all the multipliers on the screen before the game begins again. It effectively allows you to win more. During this round, all the “bust spots” will be replaced with winning ones.
If the roll results in one of the other fields being selected, we’re going to move into the second phase, and this means bonus rounds.
There are three bonus modes for you to explore in Boom City. The first is Dice Battle. Here, you can choose between blue and gold. Both dice will now be rolled three times to give a total score to both the blue and gold sides. The site that has the biggest total will win. If you bet correctly, the total value of both sides is awarded to you as a multiplier. However, if both sides end up with triple sixes, the prize paid out is worth a staggering 500x your bet.
The second bonus mode is called Boom or Bust. Here, a different 6×6 wall is used. It has much larger multiplier prizes, bust fields, and Hyper Jump spots. You can choose to “Keep Rolling” or “Cash Out” when you roll the dice. The idea is to get as high up the grid as you can do, to land an epic payout before you land on a bust spot. You can use “Safe Value” fields to give you some protection from one bust, but that’s it. The Hyper Jump mode moves you up to the top level (six). The Level Up spot moves you up just three levels.
Finally, we have the Lucky Drop bonus. Here, you will be taken to six columns. You get to pick one of these. The dice will then be rolled six times. Each number you land sees a multiplier added to its column. Whatever multiplier is applied to your column is what you win after the end of the rolls.
The Boom City live casino game supports an RTP rate of 96.43%, which is decent enough. It also has a maximum win of 20,000x a bet, and few players will grumble at that.
Boom City is a considerably basic game. Many of its bonus rounds seem overly simplistic, or they sound as though they lack excitement. However, we must remember that Pragmatic Play has managed to extract quite a few bonus modes from what is clearly a seemingly simple dice-based game. Moreover, we have no qualms about the payouts or RTP rates. Boom City is a game that is at least worth a look once, just to see what it’s all about.
